SMS & MMS Long Code Product and Carrier Fee Changes on T-MOBILE

From April 1st, 2021, all long code SMS and MMS terminating to T-MOBILE will be moved to its new 10 digits long code (10 DLC) A2P service. The new service has been designed specifically for commercial long code messaging and will provide improved stability and deliverability.

Besides T-MOBILE the following providers have already implemented surchages for SMS and MMS messages: AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, C Spire Wireless, Lleida, & U.S. Cellular. The carrier fee is for SMS and MMS messages sent to T-MOBILE, AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, C Spire Wireless, Lleida, & U.S. Cellular numbers only, and is standard throughout the industry. That means all commercial long code traffic will be subject to the fee regardless of your provider. We’ll pass this fee through with no additional markup.

What is 10 DLC?

10DLC allows businesses to send application-to-person text messages (A2P) using local long codes. Traditionally, sending A2P messages to local long codes has been discouraged and disallowed according to CTIA guidelines.

Why is 10DLC being introduced?

Carriers like T-MOBILE, AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and others are introducing 10DLC to provide a sanctioned platform for businesses to send SMS and MMS messages. Their objective is to protect consumers from unwanted spam, while still allowing businesses to better connect with their customers.

Will there be a pre-vetting process for 10DLC?

The current carriers previously mentioned currently do not include a pre-vetting process. However, there may be pre-vetting processes with future carriers implementing 10DLC.

Is there any other charges?
Yes, besides the pass-through fee for each carrier previously mentioned, there is an additional fee for Carrier lookup. The default fee is $0.001 per contact. In order to determine the carrier of contact(s) being messaged over the Mobiniti platform, Mobiniti has to run carrier lookup on each contact being sent a message to. In order to make sure the carrier of the contact(s) is up to date we have to run carrier lookup once every 7 days.

What is carrier lookup and how does it work?

We run carrier lookup on each contact being sent a message to once every 7 days. We are able to receive the line type (mobile, land line, voip, or unknown) and the carrier (ATT, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, or smaller/unknown carriers). If you send a campaign or a message via API, if the contact(s) carrier lookup has not been ran in the last 7 days, then it will be. If it has been ran in the last 7 days, it will be skipped over.

Do I have to send messages to T-MOBILE, Verizon, Sprint, or the other carriers with carrier fees contacts?

No, Mobiniti can reject messages being sent to each carrier with a carrier fee over long code to save you the on their respected fee. Carrier lookup is still required in order to be able to do this. Does this affect (person-to-person) P2P traffic?

No, the surcharges and requirements for 10DLC don’t apply to P2P traffic.

What do I need to do?

You don’t need to take any action at all. There’s no change to your existing Mobiniti numbers or account. Once the service launches, all your long code traffic to T-MOBILE, Verizon, Sprint, C Spire Wireless, Lleida, & U.S. Cellular will automatically begin sending via the new 10DLC service.
