Short Code

Short codes are 5-6 digit numbers designed for high-volume, application-driven messaging. Short codes can send SMS and MMS at 1,500 Messages Per Second (MPS), and this high throughput is perfect for applications needing to send time-sensitive messages to many users at once. Furthermore, since carriers vet and approve all short codes for their intended use, they are not subject to carrier filtering or suspension for heavy traffic.

Examples of applications best suited to a short code include: marketing communications, large one-to-many notification bursts, and high volumes of one-to-one transnational notifications.

An example of a Short Code is 64600.

There is 2 different types of short codes, shared and dedicated. A shared short code can have thousands of different businesses on it utilizing it whereas a dedicated short code only has one business, organization, or application on it. Mobiniti offer's free shared short codes for certain applications. Mobiniti also offers dedicated short codes, but they have an additional fee.

Long Codes

Long codes are 10 digit numbers designed for person-to-person communications, and can send only 1 Message Per Second (MPS) per long code. Long codes can send both SMS and MMS messages. Long codes are subject to the carriers filtering and suspensions. As the carriers prepare for 10 DLC launch, a solution to improve long codes for mass A2P messaging, they are taking an aggressive approach with filtering to combat SPAM. You may see issues depending on your application. Voice/Call Forwarding is available on Toll-free numbers.

Examples of applications best suited for long codes include: appointment reminders, conversations, notifications, or 2FA.
